K-9 Unit



The Newtown Department of Police Services K-9 Unit is currently made up of one sworn police officer, a certified police dog, and is supervised by a lieutenant.  The Sworn Officer (handler) is Officer Felcia Figol, her partner is Baro, and they are supervised by Operations Lieutenant George Sinko.

Baro was born in Czechoslovakia in March 16, 2003 and had first level training prior to his arrival to the Newtown Police Department. He was certified in April of 2005 by North American Polcie Work Dog Association and the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association and has been trained in Tracking, Building Searches, Area Searches, Narcotic Detection, Handler Protection and Obedience. Officer Figol and Baro are certified annualy as a team and work as a team when deployed.

 While patroling the Town of Newtown, Baro rides with Officer Figol in a special designed police vehicle. The inside is equipped with a special platform so Baro can ride safely and comfortably. The car is equipped with a temperature control system that will send an electronic "page" to Officer Figol if the vehicle air conditioner malfunctions causing the temperature in the vehicle to rise. The vehicle will also automatically roll  the windows down  for Baro's comfort.  Additionally,  the vehicle is equipped with a "back-up" system.


Baro is trained to detect the odors of marijuana, heroin, crack, cocaine, ecstasy, and all related paraphernalia. Baro is also able to track by scent.  Baro is able to conduct area searches for people and articles.  Baro is trained in evidence recovery, handler protection/suspect apprehension, as well as in narcotics detection.


Officer Figol and K-9 Baro are available for public demonstrations by appointment.  Please call 203-270-4255 and ask for Officer Figol's voicemail.  Leave a call back number with the dates, times, and organization that the demonstration will be conducted for.  Officer Figol will respond to your request and provide you with the necessary information to review your request.
                                                                                                                                           

Officer Figol and Baro are partners and work together around the clock. Officer Figol takes care of Baro on and off duty. Baro is always exercised to keep him in top physical condition.
