SERVICES OFFERED BY SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Newtown Housing Rehabilitation Program is administered by the Social Services Department. The Director provides oversight for the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program. All questions that pertain to community development programs should be directed to Ann LoBosco, 203-270-4330.
BACKPACKS
Work with Newtown Junior Women’s Club, Inc. to supply backpacks with
school supplies for our low-income families each August.
ENERGY ASSISTANCE
Provision of assistance to eligible households for their primary source of heat.
FOOD PANTRY
Food pantry is available to low-income families living in Newtown. All items are
donated and collected through various food drives. Items always needed: soups,
canned fruit, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, tomato products, cleaning supplies,
personal products, dog/cat food, cereal, peanut butter/jelly, school snacks, juice boxes.
HOLIDAY BASKETS
Work with different organizations including The Newtown Fund and Women Involved in
Newtown to provide Thanksgiving and Holiday Baskets to needy families and
individuals living in Newtown.
HOMEFRONT
Provides quality of life repairs for homeowners with significant financial limitations.
HOUSING
Assist the elderly and disabled in filling out housing applications. Recertification is
required on a yearly basis. Documentation needed to apply: All income for the
current year including stocks, CDs, interest; six months of bank statements.
HUSKY/MEDICAID/ACCESS HEALTH
Assist families and individuals in need of health insurance with the application process.
MEDICARE (Supplemental, Part D for prescriptions, Medicare Savings Program)
Determine various plans available to individuals on Medicare.
MEDICARE SAVINGS PLAN
For qualified individuals, an application must be completed each year. Program pays for
Medicare Part B premium ($104.90). Also, qualifies applicant for Extra Help which pays
for the Part D premium and cost of prescriptions is between $2.55 and $6.35.
NEWTOWN FUND
Work in conjunction with Newtown Fund to assist families and individuals with bills (rent,
fuel assistance, utility bills, etc.).
NEWTOWN YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES
Provide counseling sessions for income eligible individuals with no health insurance.
OPERATION FUEL
Program provides assistance for a household’s primary space heating energy needs,
and assistance for a household’s secondary energy needs.
PART D – MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN
RENTER’S REBATE
Program available to the elderly and totally disabled individuals.
SALVATION ARMY
Work with Salvation Army to collect funds through private donations, bell ringing
and mail appeal. The Newtown Salvation Army Service Unit retains 90% of all funds
collected which are used to assist qualified residents with utility bills, medical/dental, rent, car repair, eye glasses, etc.
SENIOR TAX CREDIT
Available to homeowners who are 65 years or older and have met certain income
requirements.
SOCIAL SECURITY
Assist newly retired individuals with enrolling in Medicare programs, and help
disabled people with applications needed for State and Federal assistance.
SWEETHART BUS
Transportation service for seniors and persons with disabilities.
SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
Work with the Parks & Recreation Department to solicit donations to help low income
families with summer camp.
