Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in pursuing a law enforcement career with the Newtown Police Departments.  Applicants taking this test will be eligible for employment with the Newtown Police Department.  To help limit the number of days a candidate must devote to taking the tests, the first two phases of the testing process will be be announced.  The Written Test will be administered at 9:30 A.M. in the cafeteria with the Physical Ability Test immediately following.  Testing for these two phases should be completed by 1:00 P.M.

Attached to this letter are the following items:
·       Description of physical ability tests to be administered as well as qualification standards.
·       Medical Approval Form (To be completed by a physician prior to May 5, 2007, and brought with you on the test day)
·       Directions to Newtown High School

All applicants should report to Newtown High School on Saturday, May 5, 2007, by 9:00 A.M. for sign-in.  Applicants must provide two (2) forms of identification, at least one of which must be photo identification.  No applicants will be admitted after the 9:30 A.M. start time of the test.  There are no locker or shower facilities available to applicants, so please wear appropriate attire to participate in the Physical Ability Testing following the Written Test.  Sneakers must be worn for the run.

To Police Officer Applicants:

The Towns of Newtown  are accepting applications for the position of police officer.

        Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
·       Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of appointment to the position of police officer.
·       Graduated from an accredited high school, or obtained a formal certificate of equivalency to high school graduation.
·       Be a United States citizen
·       Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
·       No Felony or Class A or B Misdemeanor convictions

HOW TO APPLY

Fill out and sign the employment application and return it to the Newtown  Police Department with a $50.00 check or money order payable to the Town of Newtown.  The $50.00 fee is a non-refundable administrative filing/processing fee due at the time the application is placed on file.  There will be no additional charges associated with the application/employment process. The application fee of $50.00 will be waived for certified officers and applicants with financial hardships.

The Written and Physical Ability Phases of the process will be held on:

Further testing and examinations will be on a “selected basis” based, in part, on the applicant’s written score and selection of a manageable pool of applicants to proceed to the next phase of testing.

ABOUT THE NEWTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Newtown is located in Fairfield County, Connecticut and borders Brookfield.  Newtown is approximately 60 square miles and has a population of 27,996 as of the 2005 census.  The Newtown Police Department was organized in 1971 and has a current authorized strength of 45 sworn officers.  The Department is divided into the Administrative / Support Services Bureau which includes the Records Division and Communications.  The Operations Bureau includes the Patrol Division, Detective Division, Youth Officer, 2 School Resource Officers, Accident Investigation Team, and a Commercial Truck Inspection Officer

Police Officers are represented by the Newtown Police Union, Local 3153, AFSCME Council 15 in contract negotiations for salary and benefits.

Police Officers must successfully complete basic recruit training at the Connecticut POST Council Training Academy, as well as complete a probationary period.

The Town supplies initial uniform, equipment, and firearm.  Each officer receives a $600 per year clothing allotment.  Additional benefits include paid vacation, 13 paid holidays, pension plan, medical benefits, and uniform cleaning and tuition assistance.
