What is the SPA?

The Student Police Academy is a program that provides Newtown High School students with a firsthand overview of the broad spectrum of career paths and opportunities in Law Enforcement.  It includes guest speakers of various areas of expertise from a variety of State, Federal, County, and Military Law Enforcement Agencies.

When is the SPA?

The Academy is usually held bi-annually in the Spring depending on student interest.

Where is the SPA held?

Classes are typically held at Newtown Police Headquarters or Newtown High School.  Sometimes the course involves field trips and experiential learning opportunities.

How long is each class?

Classes are typically from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Is there a Ride Along?

Yes!  Ride alongs are optional, but strongly encouraged.  Parental permission is required for students under age 18.

Each student will have the opportunity to ride with an officer on patrol. The student will not be placed in any danger during this 2 hour tour.

Who teaches the classes?

A variety of experts from various State, Federal, County, and Military Law Enforcement Agencies

Who can apply for the SPA?

The Student Police Academy is free and open to any High School student.

Space is available for only 25 students, and preference will be given to Newtown students who have not attended a previous Student Police Academy.

How can I apply for the SPA?

All that is required is a completed application: Available from the Career Center.

How will I know if I am granted a seat?

You will be contacted approximately one week after your application is received to confirm your attendance. Each prospective student must be able to attend at least seven of the classes in order to receive a certificate of completion.
