Summer and Sport Program update

The Parks and Recreation team sent out an email and social media posts to our community on March 13th that due to public health concerns and the closing of Newtown schools, all programs were postponed indefinitely and fields and organized activities will resume once schools reopen.

We all understand that we are dealing with unchartered territory at this point; we feel it is important to try to give families the opportunity to start to plan for summer programs and recreation as quickly as possible and provide the opportunity to those that need camp and programs to start as soon as we are able.

We now know that fields will not open until at least May 20 when schools are currently scheduled to reopen, however we will pay close attention to any changes assigned by the Governor.   Once again, all sports organizations should continue planning modified seasons should it be necessary to remain closed beyond this date.  We are additionally, monitoring the situation for Day Camp and summer programs.  We have learned that since teachers and schools are providing distance learning the school year will end on June 16th.

At this point, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow all guidelines from the CDC and the State of Connecticut as to when we can begin our summer camp seasons and programs. We will continue to plan for our summer programs and Day Camp to begin on Monday, June 22nd.

Here is the plan (as of 4/2/2020):

·     Any camp sessions or summer programs that cannot run due to CDC or State of Connecticut guidelines due to COVID-19 will be refunded.

·     We will continue to communicate with you through email and our website and Facebook as details become clearer throughout the Spring.

This situation continues to change daily, so we do reserve the right to make further changes to our camp season and programming if necessary. We thank you for your understanding, patience as we all try, and sort through this together! In the meantime, stay well, please keep your distance so we can plan for a fun and healthy summer with open facilities, sports in play, Day Camp, concerts, events and all that we are so eagerly looking forward to.

Thank you,

Newtown Parks and Recreation
