Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia Halstead has announced that June is dog licensing month. All dogs over six months old must be licensed. Last year 1,841 dog tags were issued.

Licensing your dog verifies that rabies immunization is up to date, as the dog owner must present a copy of the pet’s rabies certificate when obtaining a license. Connecticut law requires all dogs to wear their assigned tag. This assists animal control and others in identifying lost or runaway pups.

Dog licenses with a current rabies certificate on file may be renewed online starting June 1st.

There are many convenient ways to complete registration.

Online. Starting June 1, visit the town clerk’s page at newtown-ct.gov for the link.

By mail. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a check made out to the Town Of Newtown to Town Clerk’s Office, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown CT 06470.

Drop box. At the north entrance of the municipal center, by the tax office.

In person. Visit the town clerk’s office.

The following documentation is required:

*Copy of a current rabies certificate, if not already on file; and

*Copy of spay or neuter certificate, if this is the first time the dog is being licensed.

Fees are set by Connecticut state statue and are as follows:

*Dogs that are spayed or neutered, $8; and
*Dogs that are not spayed or neutered, $19.

Renewal reminders will be mailed this week for currently licensed dogs.

Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic

A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs will take place on Saturday, June 12, from 9 to 11 am, outside the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street. The fee is $20 per pet, CASH ONLY.

A tent will be set up in case of inclement weather.

A rabies certificate — not tags of prior vaccination — or a current dog license certificate showing the rabies expiration date is valid until June 12, 2021, must be presented for a three-year vaccination dose, otherwise the pet will get a one-year dose.
