Tax Collector
The Tax Collector is responsible for billing and collecting real estate, personal property and motor vehicle taxes. Our goal is to help maintain the fiscal health of the Town of Newtown by ensuring timely collections through proper implementation of CT state statutes and assisting the public in understanding the taxation process with regard to these laws. This office prepares tax bills from the Grand List, which is furnished by the Assessor. In addition to taxes, the Tax Collector's office is also responsible for the billing and collecting of sewer and water use charges and benefit assessments.

- Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes - can be paid in full in July, however, the Town gives the option to pay in two installments. The 1st installment is due in July (the last day to pay without penalty is Aug 1, unless it falls on a weekend), and the 2nd is due in January (the last day to pay without penalty is Feb. 1, unless it falls on a weekend). Please note: If the bill is under $50, it will be due in one installment in July.
- Motor Vehicle Taxes - must be paid in full during the month of July (the last day to pay without penalty is Aug. 1, unless it falls on a weekend).
- Motor Vehicle Supplemental Taxes (if applicable) - due and payable in full during January (the last day to pay without penalty is Feb. 1, unless it falls on a weekend).
If you are unable to pay your bill in full, partial payments are always accepted.
Connecticut General Statute (CGS) § 12-146 mandates that delinquent municipal property taxes in Connecticut are subject to interest at a rate of 18% per annum, or 1.5% per month, applied from the original due date. Interest is calculated on the principal, with partial payments applied to interest first, and a $2 minimum charge per installment. Mailed payments are considered on-time as long as the envelope bears a valid USPS postmark on or before the last day to pay. In the absence of a USPS postmark, we are required to accept the payment as of the date it is received.
If you own property in town, it is your responsibility to get your tax bill, per state statute*. If your mortgage lender holds escrow for your taxes, they should have requested your bill directly from us – but in the event that you receive it, please forward the bill to your lender.
*Failure to send out or receive a tax bill does not exempt you from payment of all taxes and all interest charges. - CT General Statute 12-130
