“How do I get a copy of my DD214?”
If you (or a loved one) does not have their DD214, take action before you NEED to have it. There are several ways to get a replacement, however, most of the calls we get are from Veterans or family members that need it RIGHT NOW. Unfortunately, it is often not a “right now” process. Here are a few options:
a) Check with the town clerk of the town where the Veteran lives. Service members should bring a copy of their DD214 to their town clerk.
b) Check with us at Connecticut Veterans Affairs. We have an archive of over 130,000 DD214s. We will require proper identification and a written release of information prior to release. You can e-mail us at [email protected]
c) Submit a request to the National Archives. Requests can be done by mail, but the most efficient way is online at https://vetrecs.archives.gov/VeteranRequest/home.html
d) If you need proof of Veterans status for burial and military honors, please coordinate with your funeral director. Funeral directors have priority with the National Archives for retrieval of discharge documents for the purpose of burial and military honors.
Again, once you have your discharge documents, please make sure you keep them in a safe place and let your loved ones know where they are.
