Automated Work Zone Speed Control (AWZSC) Program

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has informed the Town of Newtown that Automated Work Zone Speed Control (AWZSC) equipment will be operating on I‑84 within the Climbing Lane Extension project area beginning July 26, 2026.

This technology is designed to improve safety for both workers and drivers in active construction zones. The system will record vehicle speeds and may issue Warnings or Infractions in accordance with Connecticut General Statute 13a‑263.

The equipment will be operated by CTDOT’s vendor, Acusensus. Residents can learn more about how the program works at portal.ct.gov/knowthezone.
