What it is. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. There are actions that residents can take to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Get vaccinated if you can. Regardless of reported effectiveness, any level of protection is better than none. Flu shot may not prevent the flu, but could lessen severity and duration.

Stop the Germs. Sick people should be avoided. If you are sick, stay home. If you are healthy, avoid sick people. Wash hands often. Cover nose and mouth with tissue when coughing a sneezing and then throw it out. Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands! Avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth.
Take Antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. They work best if started within 2 days of illness onset. Call your primary care doctor to see what is best for you.
Maintain your health. Do everything you can to maintain or improve your health. The healthier you are the more resistant your body is to disease. Adopting healthy behaviors such as getting plenty of sleep, being physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, eating nutritious food and avoiding tobacco can prevent or reduce the damage done by many illnesses, including influenza. Be good to yourself and take care of your body.
